The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Brigadier General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, on Thursday, July 17, 2025, received a high-level delegation from Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading shipping lines, at the Authority’s Headquarters.
The visit formed part of Hapag-Lloyd’s efforts to explore areas of mutual interest and deepen collaboration with Ghana’s ports. It also reaffirmed the shipping giant’s commitment to continuing and expanding its operations in the country.
During the meeting, the delegation commended GPHA for the efficiency and professionalism with which Ghana's ports handle their vessels, describing the experience as consistently impressive.
They revealed that Hapag-Lloyd has plans to scale up its presence in Ghana and, as part of this strategy, sought to familiarize themselves with the operational facilities and capacities of both the Tema and Takoradi Ports.
In his remarks, the Director General briefed the delegation on the Authority’s plans to dredge the Port of Tema to accommodate larger vessels and enhance overall port performance.
Brig. Gen. Tanye-Kulono also encouraged Hapag-Lloyd to consider deploying container vessels to the Port of Takoradi, given its rising prominence and ongoing infrastructure development.
He further urged the company to increase its cargo volumes through Ghana’s ports to reinforce the already strong partnership and contribute to the growth of the maritime trade corridor in the sub-region.
The visiting delegation included Christiaan Goeman Borgesius, Senior Director Operations, Middle East, Jubil Thankachan, Director Marine Operations, Middle East, Thomas Elling, Managing Director, West Africa and Adian Hill, Head of Operations, West Africa.
Also, present at the meeting was the Director of Port of Tema, Mr. Tebon Zumah, General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Dr. Kingsley Antwi-Boasiako, and General Manager, Finance, Mr. Khalid Nuhu.
The engagement marks a positive step toward enhanced collaboration between GPHA and Hapag-Lloyd, as Ghana positions itself as a key maritime hub in West Africa.
