30 TEMA PORT SECURITY PERSONNEL TRAINED IN CRIME THREATS BY MILITARY POLICE

30 security personnel from the Port of Tema have been trained by the Ghana Military Police in criminal law, police operations, bomb threats, incident management, security management concepts and operations, workplace violence and other vital security management skills.
At the end of the 2weeks training program, the Commanding Officer of the Ghana Military Police, Lt. Col. Francis Kojo Bannerman entreated the trainees to be extra alert in order to identify threats to security since it is the essence of the two week course.
“The threats to security in the sub region and the world as a whole are real. There is therefore the need for us to remain professional, vigilant and extra alert. It is in the light of this that the high command of the port management has made it possible for you to undergo this course. I believe that, it would not be long before this institution starts enjoying the payoff of this course,” he stated.
The Deputy Port Security Manager of Tema Port, Kingsley Darko said security has moved from obscurity to the necessary standard devoid of the misconception that security is reserved for people of lower repute.
He said modern concepts of security are being pursued to lift high the image of the entire Port Authority in security dealings.

“It is a statement of fact, that the cardinal principle upon which security hinges is crime prevention and if it is so, security must strive in our stride to ensure that we create an enabling environment for the workforce to operate for management or the company to achieve its stated objectives.”


TEMA BRANCH MANAGER OF GSA ENGAGES THE PRESS
The Tema branch of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority has organised a get together with members of the press in the Tema Metropolis to update them on happenings within the maritime trade and the activities of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority. The get together also created the opportunity for the Shippers’ Authority and to elicit the support of the media to sensitise and educate their stakeholders, and the entire shipping community.
Monica Josiah said the Authority remains committed to addressing problems of shippers in order to ensure safe, reliable and cost-effective cargo handling at Ghana’s ports.
“When we are able to cut down the cost of doing shipping business in the logistics chain and all that, I believe the benefits translates to all of us,” she stated.

Monica Josiah who also has responsibility for the Volta and Eastern Region offices of the Shippers’ Authority said, one cardinal activity the Authority intends to embark on in 2018 is to carry out outreach programmes to the various importers and exporters in Tema, Volta and Eastern Regions.
She argued that once shippers are able to avoid demurrage, the country will be better off economically because the cost of doing business would be reduced.
“I don’t think Ghana should even be paying anything on demurrage but we also have to put our house in order by doing the right thing as importers and exporters and also the various agencies so that we can bring down the levels. Currently we are looking at figures of over 70 Million USD as of 2017. We are trusting and hoping that by the time we end 2018, the figure would have gone down significantly”, the Tema Branch Manager explained. 
Monica Josiah entreated importers to always engage the services of accredited and genuine freight forwarders and customs house agents in order to avoid payment of illegal fees in the clearance chain.


PORT OF TEMA DONATES CONTAINERS TO GHANA EDUCATION SERVICE
As part of its corporate social responsibilities, the Port of Tema has donated two 40-footer containers to the Greater Accra Regional office of the Ghana Education Service.
The donation is to aid in decongesting the offices of the GES in the Greater Accra region.
Presenting the containers, the Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of Tema Port, Josephine Asante expressed hope that the donations will be able to bring relief to the Ghana Education Service.
Josephine Asante said the Port Authority is committed to the education sector, hence, will do everything within its means to ensure it is uplifted.
“Our doors are always open to you, anytime you need any help and you think we can offer, why not? We will, because this is also a government institution. Moreover, the education sector is something that we should all try to uplift,” she expressed.
Receiving the containers on behalf of the Regional Education Service, officials expressed gratitude to the Port of Tema and said the containers would serve as backup storage facility at their new office premises.
He seized the opportunity to appeal to other stakeholders who have interest in the development of education in the country to continue to extend a helping hand to GES when they can.
“We were handicapped; we had to fall on you so that you will extend that courtesy to us. We are so grateful that you have come to our aid, this is going to help a lot, and we are going to decongest most of our offices,” said the Public Relations Officer, Ghana Education Service, Golden Abradu.
TEMA SHIPYARD REPAIRS RAPTURED MARINE LOADING ARM TO MAKE WAY FOR LPG RECEIPT AT TEMA PORT
The Tema shipyard has completed repair works on the raptured marine loading arm at the oil and gas jetty in the Tema Port which led to the suspension of LPG receipt at the facility.
Speaking to Eye on Port, the CEO of the Tema Shipyard, Capt. Francis Kwesi Micah in an interview said the loading arm which was raptured due to a harsh storm during discharge, required a special form of steel to be repaired, however, the boss of the Tema shipyard said, it took less than a week for the Shipyard to work assiduously on the loading arm.
“On Tuesday, 5th June, the finishing work was done and have been sent back to the mechanical department of the GPHA where they will proceed to get it fixed to facilitate the discharge of the LPG”, he updated.
He said, the loading arm has now been finally sent to GPHA’s mechanical department who would fix it to its appropriate position for receipt of LPG to resume at the oil and gas jetty of Tema Port.
“It was not something extraordinary for us to get it done. We have the capability in terms of the calibre of marine engineers in house as well as the welders and fabricators that are all certified under class matters. It was just a matter of supervision and the way the managerial enterprise is now working over there, it was worked assiduously and it has been fixed.”
He said the Tema Shipyard has an enormous potential, and with the right capital support, they would play a very meaningful role in Ghana’s growing maritime enterprise.
“We are a force to reckon with in terms of marine repairs and heavy industrial fabrication which places us in the stead. Once we are well fitted and locked up, we can do heavy industrial matters that pertains to even doing works on FPSO modules as time progresses,” the Tema Shipyard boss said.   


STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT ON REDESIGNING A PAPERLESS EXPORT PROCESS

The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and its partner agencies including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority have met with stakeholders in the export sector to discuss measures that would produce a flawless flow in the paperless design for export.
This follows the initiative of the Director General of GPHA, Paul Ansah, of augmenting the potential of the export trade in Ghana.
The heads of the institutions directly involved in the export business had earlier met with the Director General to discuss their individual roles to realize this vision.
At the recent meeting, Customs took the stakeholders through the blueprint of the paperless flow for the export trade in a presentation.
The officials said the aim of customs in optimizing the export process is to leverage on the back of ICT making all procedures paperless.


“What we want to do is to strengthen the export and re- export control. We want to first to minimize revenue leakage with respect to refund and drawback”, Chief Revenue Officer, Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority John Acquah said.
He said measures are to be implemented to replace physical examination with scans, which he said will facilitate the clearance processes.
 “We just want to do away with physical examinations and rely on scans unless there is a problem with it”, Chief Revenue Officer, Mr Philip Agbeko Dawuso added.
To avoid the unfortunate incidence of rejection of goods exported, Food and Drugs Authority said it was incumbent on Customs to ensure that goods are certified by the FDA before being exported.
 “Customs, being the last point of call should check the certificates of FDA before leaving the shores of Ghana. We want to emphasize on standards and quality, these are important issues considered outside”, Jake Amoako Mensah, Food and Drug Board admonished.
 The National Security Coordinator emphasized the importance of his outfit in the export chain.
“The members of security should be captured more in this process. Trade facilitation is good but we don’t have to sacrifice the security of this huge facility in the port while carrying out this process”, Sub Lt. Christian Tettey opined.
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority, however, alerted that, for the port to have a successful export trade, it should be supported with the right infrastructure.
“The single scanner at the export terminal has been taken away so at the export terminal we don’t have a scanner yet we are proposing that all export containers are going to be scanned”, Head of Freight and Logistics, Ghana Shippers Authority, Fred Asiedu-Dartey said.

The General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs of GPHA, Esther Gyebi-Donkor explained that the proposed export paperless platform should capture shipping lines and require them to update their processes.
“The current system makes provision for the lines to advise us. For example, if you are going to export empties, they advise us on the quantities with the container numbers even before they start coming to our gate. So that we would know and make room for the area that will consolidate the containers before they even start moving the boxes to the gate of the port”, she suggested.
