Takoradi Port DETAILS
AIRPORT >>
Kotoka International Airport at Accra is 230 km east of Takoradi. There is
a military air base at Takoradi.
ANCHORAGE >>
Vessesl can anchor anywhere NE of the lee breakwater head. Depth is mostly over 15m with good holding ground. A wreck with depth 8.5m is in position approximately 04 degrees 53.3N 001 43.0W. A patch of about 14m in position approximately 04 degrees 53.7N 001 42.5W.
QUARANTINE >>
There are no dedicated quarantine anchorage.Vessels are cleared at berth.Generally, there are no hurricanes during the rainy season ie April -June. The prevailing winds are the south westerlies. There may be gusty winds during rain.
APPROACH >>
Approach is free from hazards apart from the Takoradi reef, south of the
main breakwater, and wrecks noted on Admiralty Chart No 3102. Channel
depth at entrance is about 11.5 metres.
ARRIVAL >>
The port requires 48 hours’ advance notice of estimated time of arrival
(ETA). This should be updated 24 hours and 12 hours before ETA.
BULK CARGO >>
Special berths available for bauxite, manganese and clinker. Manganese
is discharged from rail wagons and delivered by conveyor directly to the
ship’s hold. Bauxite is stored outside the port and conveyed to the quayside
by conveyers. There is a 364 metre jetty for discharging clinker.
BUNKERS >>
Diesel and other fuel oils available at the main quay by pipeline and road
tanker from Mobil, Goil and Shell.
QUALITY SERVICE >>
The Port offers unmatched customer service. Takoradi which is renowned for its good security network has further strengthened its security with the installment of closed circuit television in the Port.
There is no congestion in the Port, most vessels can be berthed on arrival without much delay. With accurate documentation, it is possible to clear goods through the Port within a couple of days. In addition, there is in place an attractive and flexible tariff. At the Port of Takoradi, transit operators are further given additional incentives.
Other competitive advantages of the port include efficient cargo handling, good road linkages and trucks.

THE IDEAL GATEWAY >>
The port of Takoradi, Ghana’s premiere port was opened in 1928. Takoradi, the Regional capital of the Western Region of Ghana is about midway between the Ports of Tema and Abidjan. It is about four hours drive from Accra, the capital city. The Port is well connected to its hinterland which makes it the preferred and ideal gateway to the middle and northern part of Ghana and the Sahelian countries- Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. The Port is also serviced by leading shipping lines/companies and clearing and forwarding companies.
BUSINESS HOURS >>
The port is open seven days a week, all year round, except on Christmas
Day and Good Friday when ships are handled only in emergency. The
port operates two shifts: 07.30 hours to 19.30 hours and 19.30 hours to
07.30 hours. Overtime rates apply on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays
and during lunch breaks.
TRADE >>
Annually, the Port handles over 600 vessels, 37% of total national seaborne traffic, 62% of national exports and 20% of total national imports.
The main exports include Manganese, Bauxite, Cocoa and Forest products while key imports are Clinker, Containerized cargo, Oil products and Wheat. In recent years Takoradi has been handling large volumes of transit cargo for Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Many transit operators have found the Takoradi corridor fast and cost-effective and thus prefer to use this corridor.

FACILITIES >>
Berthing facilities include four multipurpose berths with drafts between 9.0m to 10.0m and dedicated berths for Manganese, Bauxite and Oil. There are also buoys with a maximum draft of 11.0m.
With the completion of its three modern sheds, the Port now has a covered area of 140,000 sq. metres and an open storage area of 250,000 sq. metres which enables the Port to store a variety of cargoes. The Port has a container holding capacity of more than 5000TEUs and 100 reefer points for storing refrigerated containers.
Furthermore, the Port of Takoradi has adequate stock of cargo handling equipment and a wide range of water-crafts to support its operations.
The Port’s vessel repairs facilities are being modernized and expanded. The slipway is being expanded to accommodate vessels up to 500tonnes deadweight and a length of 40-45m.The drydock is being expanded to a length of 55m and breadth of 14.5m.
FUTURE >>
Studies are currently underway to expand and improve the Port facilities.

The maximum draft at the wharf is 10m whiles the maximum draft at the Buoys is 11m.The draft at the berths and buoys increase by one metre at high tide.

STORAGE FACILITIES >>

REEFER POINTS >>
The Port has 100 reefer points for storing refrigerated containers for frozen meat, fish, chicken and fruit.
VESSEL REPAIRS FACILITIES >>
Rehabilitation work is currently underway to modernize and expand the Port’s slipway and drydock facilities.
The slipway is being expanded to accommodate vessels and crafts up to 500 tonnes deadweight and a length of 40 – 45m. The drydock is being extended to a length of 55m and a breadth of 14.5m.
EQUIPMENT >>
Takoradi Port has adequate stock of cargo handling equipment like Forklifts Trucks, Tele-Trucks, Reach Stackers, Mobile Cranes, RoRo Tractors, and Rail Shunters for handling all types of cargo.
In addition to these equipment, the Port has a wide range of water-crafts like Tugboats, Lighter Tugs, a water Barge and a Patrol Boat to support its operations.
CONTAINER SCANNER >>
A gamma ray container scanner has been installed at the Port to facilitate clearing of containers and enhance the quality of services delivered to customers.
CLOSED - CIRCUIT TELEVISION >>
The security network has further been improved with the installation of a closed - circuit television network in the Port. With the Port of Takoradi, the safety of customers’ cargo can be guaranteed.
FISHING HARBOUR >>
The Port of Takoradi also has a fishing harbour located at Sekondi. The fishing harbour which has an ice – plant can take vessels up to 3m draft.
