Three main types of vessels operate in the Harbour these include: steel vessels, inshore boats and canoes.
Steel Vessels >>
These are mostly foreign owned vessels and measuring between 20 – 30 metres in length with 1.5 – 2metres draft.
Inshore Boats >>
These are large boats made up of wood and measure between 8-15metres in length with maximum draft of 1.8metres. They operate with no winches and are fitted with marine diesel engines of about 100 hp. Most are locally constructed in Sekondi, Tema and Elmina. They generally fish along the coast.
Canoes >>
These are in three categories operating in the Port:
- Large size canoes
- Medium size canoes
- Small size canoes
Large size canoes >>
They are normally between 13 to 20 metres in length and are fitted with outboard motor engines of about 80hp. They engage in purse seine fishing during the peak season and gill net fishing during the off seasons.
Medium size Canoes >>
These measure about 5-8metres in length and may or may not be fitted with engines.
Small size canoes >>
Small size canoes operating in the Port measure up to 5metres in length. They engage in line fishing, beach seine and set netting.
