    The Port of Takoradi handles both imports and exports. Exports constitute about 66% whiles imports constitute 34% of the trade passing through the Port. All imports of textiles into the country are supposed to pass through Takoradi Port.


  2. Does Takoradi Port handle containers?
    Yes. In 2006 the Port handled over 51,000 TEUs of containers. The Port also has 100 Reefer Points for refrigerated Containers.


  3. How long does it take to clear goods from Takoradi Port?
    If a shipper’s documents are filled accurately, one can clear goods within 2/3 days.

    The Port has covered storage capacity of 140,000m2 and open storage capacity of 250, 000m2 .

1. What are the procedures and processes involved in the clearance of goods from the port?

 The clearance process involves the following stakeholders, Customs Excise and    Preventive Service (CEPS), Shipping Agents and Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority, Custom House Agents, Destination Inspection Companies (DICs), and Receipt and Delivery Service providers.
The process is facilitated by the Clearing Agent/Custom BrokerS

2.What are some of the documents needed to clear cargo from the port?

The documents needed in the clearance of cargo include:

  1.       Original Bill Of Lading (B/L)
  2.       Attested Invoice
  3.       Import Declaration Form (IDF)
  4.       Tax Clearance Certificate (TCC)
  5.       Taxpayers Identification (TIN) Number


    3..How long does it take to clear cargo from the port?

 It takes an average of 2-3days to clear your cargo from the port i.e. if all your documents are complete and accurate.

4. What are the main shipping lines calling Tema port?

The main shipping lines calling the port of Tema include Maerskline, Pacific      International Lines, Gold Star Line, Euro Africa Lines, Messina Lines, Grimaldi Lines, OT Africa Line, China Shipping Lines, CMA CGM French Line, Mitsui OSK Lines, Mediterranean Lines, Hapag Lloyd, etc.

5. What are the main port charges?

  • Stevedore Charges and Port Dues- paid by the Shipping Agent

6.Does the port have a one- stop shop system where all clearance and customs  procedures are handled?

Yes, Golden Jubilee Terminal (GJT), an off-dock terminal is a one stop shop facility for cargo clearance. The terminal provides the logistics for cargo to be collected and transferred from the port, devanned and stored/ warehoused at the terminal for onward delivery to the consignee. All the stakeholders involved in cargo delivery process have offices located within the terminal. They include Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), National Security, Drugs/Narcotics Board, Ghana Standards Board, Banking Institutions.

7. Do you have special arrangements for goods in transit?

Goods in transit (i.e. those to countries other than Ghana) attract Lower port tariffs. No custom duties are paid on transit goods and the port provides facilities for the Safety of transit cargo.

8. Can I clear my own cargo from the port?

No you will need the services of a custom broker or custom house agent to clear your cargo.

9. What berthing facilities do you have in the port of Tema?

Tema Port has 12 berths with draughts between 8 and 11.5m. Berth 1 &2 constitute the Dedicated Container Terminal operated by Meridian Port Services (MPS), whilst Berths 3 – 12 are multi-purposed Berths to which all the stevedoring companies have equal access.
