VESSEL TYPES
There are mainly two types; wooden vessels, also called “Legelege” in local parlance and metal vessels.
Wooden Vessels
Wooden vessels have LOA’s ranging between 30 – 70 meters; and are Semi-Industrial vessels mainly owned and operated by indigenous Ghanaians.Their operations peak during the months of June – September. Main catches during this period are herrings and salmon.
Metal Vessels
The metal vessels are trawlers, tuna vessels and deep-sea carriers. The trawlers are of two (2) types; single and pair trawlers.
The pair trawlers have LOA’s ranging between 34 – 43 meters; and gross tonnage ranging from 200tons to 1000 tons. These are able to land between 55 to 65 metric tons of fish per fishing trip.
The tuna vessels are of two (2) types. The smaller ones with LOA’s of between 48 – 50 meters and gross tonnage ranging between 400 and 600. These are able to land between 200 – 250 metric tonnes of catch whilst the bigger ones with LOA’s ranging from 50 – to 65 meters and gross tonnage above 600 are able to land up to 650 metric tons per fishing trip.
Deep-Sea Carriers.
These have LOA’s ranging from 90 – 105 meters and GTs between 2000, 3000, and 4000. They are mostly chartered vessels which land between 700 – 1,4000 metric tons of imported fish mostly from Mauritania and Namibia.
