The Republic of Ghana in West Africa is rapidly becoming a maritime trading
hub for the whole sub-region.
In recent years, Ghana’s two main ports – Tema which is 30 km east of Accra
and Takoradi in the western part of the country and approximately 230km away from Accra have seen growing volumes of cargo through the ports.
With bigger and better facilities being phased in by Ghana Ports &
Harbours Authority (GPHA) and with central government offering new
incentives for trade, more and more shippers are discovering the benefits
of using Ghana’s ports.
With its central location in the sub-region, Ghana has stolen a march on
its neighbours by offering a wider range of maritime services than ever
before and delivering those services quickly and cost-effectively.
In fact, there has been a general improvement in Ghana’s infrastructure
and facilities including road, rail, road and air transport as a result of
new investment. The government-driven Gateway Project is helping
Ghana to position itself as an ideal base in the region for international
trade and investment.
Extensive FACILITIES
The Port of Tema has 11 berths located on two quays with a total frontage
of about 2,000 metres. These common user berths handle about half of
the port’s total throughput.
The port also has a dedicated bulk terminal and an oil terminal. To the
east of the main harbour are the Inner and Outer Fishing Harbours and
the tuna wharf. There is a range of facilities and sheds alongside these
berths to serve the needs of the fishing industry.
Our commitment to growth and development is second to none. Deploying the right labour and empowering them with the right tools for effective and efficient service delivery has always yeilded the right results.

All systems go for Ghana’s ports.
GHANA HAS AMBITIONS to be a maritime hub for the whole region – and
a vital part of that policy is investment in the Port of Tema.
At the same time, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) is assuming
a new role as a landlord port, with less operational and more regulatory
responsibilities.
A key priority has been the privatisation of stevedoring. Today there are
eight private stevedoring companies in the Port of Tema.
Many construction and development projects are under way to enable the
port to cope with the ever growing quantity and range of cargoes passing
over its quays.
